Product Description Templates by Category (Free)
Copy-ready product description templates for fashion, beauty, home, food and automotive, each with the facts shoppers and AI agents look for and a worked example.
The short answer
A product description template is a fixed structure of blocks and sentence frames that you fill with each product's own data: what it is, who it's for, what it's made of, how it fits or measures up, and how to use it. Templates differ by category, because people choose a moisturizer on different facts than a sofa or a brake pad.
Product description template: the structure that works in every category
Every product description template on this page uses the same six blocks in the same order. The category decides which facts go into each block, and which ones a shopper won't buy without.

The universal template, ready to copy
| Block | Template |
|---|---|
| Opening | [Brand] [Product name] is a [product type] for [buyer or use case], made from [main material or key ingredient] with [differentiating feature]. |
| Use cases | Made for [situation 1] and [situation 2]. [The problem it solves and the feature that solves it.] |
| Attributes | [Material with percentage or grade]. [Fit, size or dimensions with units]. [Color as shoppers say it]. [Finish, scent or flavor]. |
| Specs | [Spec name]: [value with unit], 4 to 8 lines, mirrored in product_detail |
| Use and care | [How to use]. [Care or storage instructions]. In the box: [contents]. |
| FAQ | [Question buyers ask]? [Direct answer in 1 to 2 sentences.] |
If material is empty for a third of your products, the slot either prints a gap or tempts a writer (or a model) to guess. Drop the sentence instead. A shorter true description beats a longer invented one, for shoppers and for AI agents.
The guide to writing product descriptions explains the reasoning behind each block. To fill the blocks with a model, start from the prompt in our free product description generator, and see how the leading AI product description generators compare when tested on real catalogs.
Fashion and apparel product description template
Fashion buyers decide on fit, fabric and how the piece hangs on a real body. Answer sizing first, because it's the one thing a shopper can't test on a screen.
| Field | Template | Example |
|---|---|---|
| Title | [Brand] [Gender] [Product type], [Fit] [Fabric], [Color] | Solenne Women's Wide-Leg Trousers, High-Rise Lyocell Twill, Ink Navy |
| Opening | [Fit] [product type] in [fabric], made for [occasion or season]. | High-rise wide-leg trousers in lyocell twill, made for office days that run into dinner. |
| Fit | Fits [true to size / small / large]. [Rise, inseam or length in cm and inches]. The model is [height] and wears size [size]. | Fits true to size. Inseam 79 cm (31 in) on a size 38. The model is 175 cm (5 ft 9 in) and wears a 36. |
| Fabric | [Composition in percentages]. [Weight in gsm]. [Stretch]. | 100% lyocell, 210 gsm. No stretch, so size for your hips. |
| Attributes | color, size, gender, age_group, material, pattern, size_system | color: ink navy; size: 36; gender: female; age_group: adult; material: lyocell |
Google's help page says apparel offers need gender, age_group and color to appear in Shopping ads and free listings, and shoes need size as well (Google Merchant Center Help). Keep the color value a word shoppers type. "NVY-04" helps nobody.
Skip the mood paragraph that opens most fashion templates. One line of brand voice, then sizing. The model's height and size worn is the fact we find missing most often, and the cheapest to add.
Selling abroad means converting size systems and units as well as words. A size chart left in centimeters on a US page sends people to the returns form. Our guide to ecommerce localization goes deeper on translating catalogs.
Beauty and skincare product description template
Beauty shoppers buy on skin type, key ingredients and how to use the product. Publish the full ingredient list as text, next to clear usage instructions.
| Field | Template | Example |
|---|---|---|
| Title | [Brand] [Product type] for [skin type or concern], [Key ingredient], [Size] | Mireille Calm Barrier Cream for Sensitive Skin, 5% Niacinamide, 50 ml |
| Opening | A [texture] [product type] for [skin type] that [visible or felt benefit]. | A light gel-cream for sensitive skin that soothes the look of redness. |
| Key ingredients | [Ingredient] at [percentage, if declared]: [what it does, in one clause]. | 5% niacinamide to even the look of skin tone; ceramide NP to support the skin barrier. |
| Who it's for | Suits [skin types]. Free from [fragrance, alcohol, essential oils], only if true. | Suits sensitive and combination skin. Fragrance-free and alcohol-free. |
| How to use | [When]. [Amount]. [Step in the routine]. [Patch test note]. | Morning and evening, a pea-sized amount after serum and before SPF. |
| Full ingredients | [Complete INCI list in label order] | Aqua, Glycerin, Niacinamide, Ceramide NP, plus the rest exactly as printed on the pack |
In Baymard's desktop study, 50% of users needed ingredient information for beauty products, and those who couldn't find it quickly dismissed the product (Baymard Institute). An ingredient list that exists only in a pack photo is invisible to agents.
Watch the benefit slot. In the US, a product claiming to "treat or prevent disease or otherwise affect the structure or any function of the human body" is also a drug (FDA). A slot that invites "clears acne" repeats that claim on hundreds of SKUs. Describe what the shopper sees and feels.
The other creams didn't lose on quality. Their pages couldn't prove a constraint.
Home and furniture product description template
Home products are bought on dimensions, materials and whether they'll fit the room. Give every measurement with its unit, and in two unit systems if you sell across markets.
| Field | Template | Example |
|---|---|---|
| Title | [Brand] [Product name] [Product type], [Material], [Color], [Key dimension] | Haldis 3-Seater Sofa, Performance Bouclé, Oat, 214 cm |
| Opening | A [size or style] [product type] for [room or space], with [differentiator]. | A deep-seated three-seater for open-plan living rooms, with removable covers you can machine wash. |
| Dimensions | W [x] x D [x] x H [x] cm ([x] x [x] x [x] in). [Key functional height]. [Doorway or stair clearance]. | W 214 x D 98 x H 82 cm (84 x 39 x 32 in). Seat height 45 cm. Fits through a 76 cm doorway with the feet removed. |
| Materials | [Part]: [material], one line per part. | Frame: kiln-dried solid pine. Cushions: high-resilience foam with a feather wrap. Cover: 88% polyester, 12% acrylic. |
| Use and care | [Cleaning]. [Indoor or outdoor]. [Load limit if relevant]. | Covers machine wash at 30°C. Indoor use only. |
Baymard recommends clearly labeled dimensions, ideally given in a second unit system too (Baymard Institute). An agent can't answer "will it fit a 220 cm wall" from an unlabeled "214 x 98 x 82".
The home-catalog error we fix most often is a dimensions field holding the box size. OpenAI's product feed spec is explicit: supply the product's dimensions, not its shipping package dimensions (OpenAI).
Move the lazy-Sunday lifestyle paragraph below the measurements. Nobody orders a sofa they haven't measured for.
Food and beverage product description template
Food pages carry legal information as well as flavor. In the EU, the mandatory label facts must be on the page before the purchase is concluded, so this template starts from the label.
Under Regulation (EU) No 1169/2011, prepacked food sold online must show all mandatory information before purchase, except the durability or use-by date. For non-prepacked food, allergens are the minimum (European Commission). Elsewhere, have whoever signs off your labels check the template.
| Field | Template | Example |
|---|---|---|
| Title | [Brand] [Product name], [Flavor or variety], [Diet or certification claim], [Net quantity] | Fieldnote Hazelnut Cocoa Granola, Low Sugar, 400 g |
| Opening | A [texture] [product type] with [main ingredients], [how it's sweetened or made], for [use]. | A crunchy oat granola with roasted hazelnuts and cocoa nibs, sweetened only with date syrup, for yogurt bowls or straight from the bag. |
| Ingredients and allergens | Ingredients: [full list in label order, with percentages where declared]. Allergens: [list]. May contain: [list]. | Ingredients: oats, hazelnuts (14%), date syrup, cocoa nibs (6%), sunflower oil, sea salt. Allergens: oats (gluten), hazelnuts. |
| Nutrition | Per 100 g [and per serving], exactly as on the label | Per 100 g and per 45 g serving |
| Storage and quantity | Net quantity [x]. Store [conditions]. Once opened, [instructions]. | 400 g. Store in a cool, dry place. Once opened, keep sealed and eat within 4 weeks. |
| Diet tags | [Vegan, gluten-free, organic], only with the matching certification or label claim. | Vegan. Not gluten-free. |
Diet claims are where templates get brands into trouble. A "free from" slot that fills itself by default is worse than no slot. Google's product_detail guidance agrees: don't submit values you haven't confirmed, such as a "False" for a Boolean just because it's the default (Google Merchant Center Help).
Automotive product description template for ecommerce
Auto parts sell on fitment. The description has to say exactly which vehicles the part fits, by year, make, model and engine, and give the part numbers buyers cross-check.
Baymard notes that with compatibility-dependent products, incomplete specs usually end in abandonment (Baymard Institute). eBay reports that parts listings with fitment data have seen a double-digit increase in conversion compared with similar listings without it (eBay).
| Field | Template | Example |
|---|---|---|
| Title | [Brand] [Position] [Part type], [Compound or spec], for [Make] [Model] [Generation] [Years] | Strada Front Ceramic Brake Pads for VW Golf Mk7 2013-2020 |
| Opening | [Position] [part type] for [vehicle range], [key benefit in driving terms]. | Low-dust ceramic front brake pads for the Golf Mk7, quiet in daily driving and easy on alloy wheels. |
| Fitment | Fits: [Make] [Model] [Generation] ([Years]), [Engines], [Axle or brake size note]. Does not fit: [exclusions]. | Fits Volkswagen Golf Mk7 (2013-2020) 1.4 TSI and 2.0 TDI with 312 mm front discs. Does not fit GTI or R models. |
| Part numbers | MPN: [number]. OEM references: [numbers]. Interchange: [numbers]. | MPN: STR-CP-2148, with OEM cross-references listed in full in the specs |
| Specs | [Position]. [Thickness or size in mm]. [Sensor included: yes or no]. [Approvals]. | Front axle. Thickness 19.5 mm. Wear sensor not included. ECE R90 approved. |
Write the fitment as text even if you run a vehicle lookup. Many fitment widgets load the list with JavaScript in a popup that crawlers and agents may never see, and OpenAI's feed spec has no compatibility field (OpenAI).
One nuance: Google's description guidance asks you to leave out details about compatible products (Google Merchant Center Help). We read that as aimed at accessory cross-selling, so we keep a one-line fitment summary in the feed and the full vehicle list on the page and in product_detail.

Templates for Merchant Center and AI shopping feeds
Page and feed descriptions share facts but follow different rules. These formats keep template output inside Google's limits and readable in ChatGPT and AI Mode.
| Field | Limit | Template | Rule to remember |
|---|---|---|---|
title | 1 to 150 characters, about the first 70 visible | [Brand] [Product type] [Deciding attribute] [Variant] | No price, promotions or company name |
description | Up to 5,000 characters, first 160 to 500 seen | Opening line, attributes in prose, specs | No links, shipping details, comparisons or category paths |
product_highlight | 2 to 100 entries, 4 to 6 recommended, 150 characters each | [Benefit] thanks to [feature] | Selling benefits only, no SEO keywords |
product_detail | Up to 100 entries, 150 characters each | [Section]:[Attribute name]:[Value] | Technical specs, confirmed values only |
question_and_answer | Optional conversational attribute (2026) | [Buyer question] with [direct answer] | Questions from reviews and tickets |
structured_description | Same as description | Same as description | For AI-generated text, labeled trained_algorithmic_media |
Sources: Google on title, description, highlights and details, plus Search Engine Roundtable. OpenAI's feed has the same title and description ceilings (OpenAI).
The copied-everywhere formula of brand plus product plus color plus size suits apparel but buries the deciding fact for parts and food. Lead with what shoppers type first: fitment for brake pads, flavor and weight for granola.
In almost every feed audit we find Shopify body_html exported raw, with <p> tags landing in the description.
If a model writes the text, label it. Google says AI-generated title and description attributes must be specified separately and labeled (Google Search Central). The same page warns that mass-generated pages without added value may violate its scaled content abuse policy. Identical sentence frames on 5,000 SKUs get you there fast. More in the Google Merchant Center guide.

Altaforma MilanoFAQ
A product description template is a fixed structure of blocks and sentence frames that you fill with each product's own data. The usual blocks are an opening line, use cases, attributes, specs, use and care, and buyer questions. The structure stays the same within a category, while the facts and wording change from product to product.
Long enough to answer every question that stops a purchase, and no longer. Google shows the first 160 to 500 characters of a feed description before shoppers expand it, so the deciding facts go first. The templates on this page usually produce 120 to 300 words per product, depending on the category.
Yes for the structure, no for the sentences. Vary the sentence frames between products and skip any slot your data cannot fill instead of padding it. Google warns that mass-generated pages without added value can violate its scaled content abuse policy, and identical copy on thousands of SKUs gets you there fast.
Start with the position and part type, then exact fitment by year, make, model and engine, plus the vehicles it does not fit. Add the MPN and OEM reference numbers, specs with approvals and what comes in the box. Write the fitment as text on the page, since many vehicle lookup widgets are invisible to AI agents.
Yes, as long as they are accurate and labeled. Google asks merchants to submit AI-generated titles and descriptions in the structured title and structured description attributes, marked as trained algorithmic media. Have someone check sizes, claims and ingredients before publishing, because a wrong spec is still your error, whoever wrote it.
