AEO vs SEO vs GEO vs ACO: The Four Acronyms Explained
Four names for a lot of overlapping work. This is the map we use with ecommerce teams, and it ends on the layer that decides whether an AI assistant recommends your products.
The short answer
The AEO vs SEO difference is the finish line. SEO gets pages ranked in search results. AEO (answer engine optimization) gets your content quoted as the direct answer. GEO (generative engine optimization) gets you cited inside AI answers from ChatGPT, Gemini or Google AI Mode. ACO (Agentic Commerce Optimization) applies all three to a product catalog, so AI shopping agents can match and recommend every SKU.
AEO vs SEO: the short answer
The AEO vs SEO difference comes down to the finish line. SEO wins a blue link, and AEO wins the answer itself. GEO extends that to AI-generated responses, and ACO is the version built for product catalogs.
- 01
SEO earns the ranking. AEO earns the quote. GEO earns a citation inside an AI-generated answer.
- 02
Most of the work overlaps. Google says its SEO best practices still apply to AI Overviews and AI Mode, with no special markup or extra requirements.
- 03
In a store, the thing that gets recommended is a product, so product data decides who wins.
- 04
ACO is the catalog layer: making each SKU readable and recommendable for AI shopping agents, in every market you sell in.
We wouldn't run these as four programs. Run one search program and push it down to the individual product.
What do SEO, AEO, GEO and ACO mean?
Each term names a different engine and a different kind of win. They were coined years apart, which is why they overlap so much.
SEO: search engine optimization
Making pages crawlable, relevant and trusted enough to rank in Google and Bing. For a store, that means product detail pages (PDPs) and category pages, internal links, clean faceted navigation and valid structured data.
It's still the floor. Forrester's Nikhil Lai notes that answer engines such as ChatGPT and Copilot rely partly on Bing's index (Chief Marketer on Forrester). The ecommerce SEO guide covers the catalog side.
AEO: answer engine optimization
Writing so a system can lift one passage as the direct answer, in featured snippets, People Also Ask boxes or voice results. Put the question in a heading, answer it in 40 to 60 words right underneath, then give the detail.
You can't mark a page up to win a featured snippet. Google picks the passage, and your only control is opting out with nosnippet or max-snippet (Google Search Central).
GEO: generative engine optimization
The term comes from a 2023 research paper by Aggarwal and colleagues. It framed GEO as helping content creators improve visibility in generative engine responses, reported gains of up to 40%, and found that what works varies by domain (arXiv). That last finding gets quoted far less than the 40%, and for retailers it matters more. The GEO for ecommerce guide covers the practice end to end.
ACO: Agentic Commerce Optimization
Agentic Commerce Optimization applies the first three to a catalog. The unit of work is the SKU. The engines are the AI shopping agents defined in our agentic commerce glossary, plus the shopping layers inside ChatGPT, Google AI Mode and Amazon Rufus.
AEO vs SEO vs GEO vs ACO, side by side
Read it left to right. Each layer keeps the one before it and adds a narrower target.
| SEO | AEO | GEO | ACO | |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Goal | Rank pages in search results | Be the quoted answer | Be cited in AI-generated answers | Be the product AI agents recommend |
| Main surfaces | Google and Bing results | Featured snippets, People Also Ask, voice | ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity, AI Overviews, AI Mode | ChatGPT shopping, Google AI Mode and Shopping, Gemini, Amazon Rufus |
| Unit of work | The page | The question | The source or brand mention | The SKU, in every market |
| What you optimize | Keywords, links, technical health | Question headings, short answers, FAQ | Clarity, evidence, third-party mentions | Attributes, copy, use cases, feeds, PDPs and PLPs |
| Main metric | Rankings and clicks | Answer ownership | Citations and share of voice | AI readiness per SKU, AI-referred revenue |
| Typical scale | Hundreds of pages | Dozens of questions | Dozens of topics | Thousands of SKUs, often in several languages |
Teams underestimate the bottom row. AEO and GEO advice assumes a few dozen important pages. A retailer with 8,000 SKUs in four languages has 32,000 product pages to get right.

Most of what AI says about you comes from elsewhereSource: McKinseyGartner predicted in 2024 that traditional search engine volume would drop 25% by 2026 (Gartner). Its January 2026 survey is more useful: only about a third of consumers think GenAI chatbots are as effective as search engines for learning, and Gartner now tells marketers to optimize for both (Gartner). Nobody gets to pick one acronym.
Is answer engine optimization the same as generative engine optimization?
In practice, mostly yes. AEO grew out of featured snippets and voice search, so it chases one quotable passage. GEO chases a place among the sources an AI model blends into its answer.
Lai puts it bluntly: "One of the most common mistakes companies make is overestimating the difference between answer engines and search engines" (Chief Marketer on Forrester). We'd be wary of anyone selling AEO and GEO as two separate retainers.
The real differences are of emphasis.
AEO optimizes for one passage
The system lifts a single answer. You win with a question-shaped heading, a short answer right under it, and a page Google already ranks.
GEO optimizes for being one of several sources
The model blends what several sources say. Third-party mentions, reviews and consistent facts across sites carry more weight, and shoppers ask more follow-up questions.
Lai adds two practical points. Many newer AI crawlers can't render JavaScript, so keep the facts in server-rendered HTML. And since users ask follow-ups, a page that answers only the first question loses the second round.
Google's own position is that there are "no additional requirements" and no special optimizations needed to appear in AI Overviews or AI Mode (Google Search Central). AEO and GEO are SEO with a different scoreboard. The GEO vs SEO comparison goes through what actually changes for a store.
Why ecommerce needs a fourth acronym
AI shopping agents recommend products, and they choose them by reading attributes. Publisher-style AEO and GEO advice barely touches that data.
Most AEO and GEO advice says publish more and earn more mentions. For a store, that's the wrong place to start.
When a shopper asks for a product, Google describes AI Mode as running a query fan-out, with multiple related searches across subtopics and data sources (Google Search Central). OpenAI says ChatGPT weighs structured metadata such as price and description, which it gets from merchants and from third-party providers (OpenAI Help Center). Google now lets merchants add conversational attributes in Google Merchant Center so its AI can match products to natural-language questions (Search Engine Land).
All three read product data. Adobe found that product pages are the least machine-readable page type on retail sites, averaging 66% against 75% for homepages (Adobe).

When we audit a catalog, the gaps are rarely in the blog. They're in a material field left empty on half the variants, or a size chart translated but never converted from inches to centimeters.
Where to start: one program, four layers
Work bottom up. Each step makes the next one pay off.
- 1
Fix the SEO base
Server-rendered PDPs and PLPs, valid Product structured data, and no AI search crawlers blocked by accident in robots.txt or a CDN bot rule.
- 2
Write answer-first
Open each product and category page with what it is and who it's for. Add three to six real shopper questions as an FAQ.
- 3
Complete the product data
Fill the attributes shoppers filter and ask on, starting with the products that carry the most demand and margin.
- 4
Make every channel agree
Same specs and price on the PDP, in the Merchant Center feed and on marketplaces. Add conversational attributes where Merchant Center offers them.
- 5
Measure readiness, then visibility
Score AI readiness per SKU first, because it tells you what to fix. Then track AI referrals in GA4.
What we'd skip, at least at the start: rewriting your whole blog for GEO, or a separate AEO content calendar. Neither helps a product whose attributes are missing. The AI visibility guide covers what to track once the data is in place.
How AndromedAI helps
AndromedAI turns ACO into catalog output: it scores every product page for AI readiness, fixes the gaps and publishes the result to every channel.
AndromedAI is the Agentic Commerce Optimization platform, built for the bottom row of that table: thousands of SKUs in many languages. The free AI Readiness Audit scores product pages on Product Data Completeness, Keyword Coverage, Customer Intent Match and Shopping Metadata. The Optimizer then rewrites titles, descriptions, bullets and FAQ, extracts attributes, and adds use cases and intents. The Creator builds complete pages for new products in 12 languages, and everything publishes back to your store and Google Merchant Center through native integrations.

FAQ
SEO gets pages ranked in search results. AEO, answer engine optimization, structures content so a search engine or AI system can quote one passage as the direct answer, for example in a featured snippet or a voice result. A page usually needs to rank before its answer gets lifted.
Mostly. Both aim to get your content used in an answer instead of listed as a link. AEO targets a single quotable passage. GEO targets a place among the several sources an AI model blends into its response. The page work behind both is largely the same.
No. Google says its SEO best practices still apply to AI Overviews and AI Mode, and Gartner's 2026 research tells marketers to optimize for both AI answers and classic search. In practice GEO sits on top of SEO, because AI search features still lean on crawlable, well-ranked pages as their sources.
ACO, Agentic Commerce Optimization, applies SEO, AEO and GEO to a product catalog. GEO usually works on pages or the brand. ACO works on each SKU, optimizing attributes, descriptions and feeds so AI shopping agents can recommend every product in every market you sell in.
No. Google says there is no special structured data required for AI Overviews or AI Mode. Accurate Product and Offer markup that matches the visible page still helps machines read price, availability and attributes reliably. Mismatches between markup and page do more harm than missing markup.
Fix the SEO base first: crawlable, server-rendered product pages and valid structured data. Then complete attributes on your highest-demand products and make your feeds match your product pages. Only after that is it worth tracking AI visibility, because the scores will mostly reflect the data gaps you have not fixed yet.
