Catalog Optimization for Dynamic Product Ads: Google Shopping, Performance Max and Meta Advantage+
A working guide to the product data behind dynamic product ads: what Google and Meta actually read from your feed, and which fixes show up first in CPC and ROAS.
By Alberto Barberis, Founder and CEO, AndromedAI · Updated October 2026
The short answer
Catalog optimization for paid ads means improving the product data that dynamic product ads are built from: titles, descriptions, categories, identifiers, attributes, images and custom labels. On Google Shopping, Performance Max and Meta Advantage+ catalog ads, this data decides which searches and audiences a product reaches, how often it gets clicked, and what it returns on ad spend.
Dynamic product ads in 30 seconds
Dynamic product ads build every ad from a row in your product catalog. How good that row is decides which searches and audiences the ad can reach, and what each sale ends up costing you.
- 01
On Google Shopping or Meta Advantage+ catalog ads there's no headline to write. The feed row is the ad: title, image, price, attributes.
- 02
Google ranks Shopping ads on bids plus relevance, and it reads relevance from your product data. A vague title loses auctions that a precise one wins for less.
- 03
Fixing catalog data is the cheapest bid increase you'll find: higher relevance and click-through rate on the same budget.
- 04
Custom labels turn the feed into a bidding tool. Margin and bestseller status stop being spreadsheet columns and become asset groups in Performance Max and product sets on Meta.
- 05
AI shopping agents read the same catalog your ads do. The complete, consistent data that lifts ROAS is also what gets a product picked in an AI answer.
Why catalog data drives paid ad performance
In catalog ads the algorithm matches products to queries and people. It can only work with what your data describes, so a generic title or an empty material field caps reach and ROAS before bidding even starts.

On a Search campaign you pick the keywords and write the ad. On Shopping or Performance Max, Google reads your feed and decides for itself which queries each product is eligible for. Google says the ranking of Shopping ads "is based on a combination of advertiser bids and relevance". The relevance half comes from your title, description, product_type, google_product_category, gtin and variant attributes like color, size and material.
Most teams obsess over bids. The cheaper gains sit in the feed.
Meta works the same way, using pixel events to pick which product each person sees. A title that reads "Item 4471 Blue" with an empty material field gives the system next to nothing to match on.
Does product data affect Google Ads Quality Score?
Directly, only in Search campaigns. Google defines Quality Score as a 1 to 10 keyword-level diagnostic with three components: expected click-through rate, ad relevance and landing page experience. Google also says Quality Score "isn't an input in the ad auction". It's a symptom of the signals the auction does use.
Treating it as a target is a mistake. Fixing the landing page moves it; rewording ad text rarely does for long.
Shopping and Performance Max report no Quality Score. Relevance there comes from your feed, and the landing page is your product detail page (PDP). A complete, specific PDP helps your Search ads too.
In catalog ads your product data does the job that keywords and ad copy do in Search, so optimizing the catalog is optimizing the ads.
How to optimize Google Shopping ads through your product data
Work the feed in order of impact. Eligibility first, then titles and categorization, then the details that make a listing richer than its neighbor. Each step widens the queries a product can win.
Most Google Shopping ads optimization advice starts with titles. We start with eligibility: a perfect title on a disapproved product earns nothing.
- 1
Fix eligibility
In Merchant Center, go to Products and filter on Needs attention. Clear disapprovals before warnings: missing or invalid
gtin, placeholderbrandvalues like "Generic", price or availability that doesn't match the landing page, promotional overlays on images. - 2
Rewrite titles
Product type, brand and the defining attribute go in the first 70 characters. Use the rest of the 150-character limit for variant details such as size, color or material.
- 3
Categorize precisely
Set
google_product_categoryto the deepest correct level and build a 3 to 4 levelproduct_typefrom your own taxonomy. It becomes your bidding and reporting structure. - 4
Upgrade images
Highest resolution, no text or watermarks, extra angles in
additional_image_link. - 5
Complete attributes
Fill
color,size,gender,age_group,material,patternanditem_group_idfor variants. Use the exact color names that appear on the landing page. - 6
Add differentiators
Submit
product_highlight,product_detailand, where it fits,question_and_answerto answer pre-purchase questions. - 7
Label for bidding
Add
custom_label_0tocustom_label_4for margin, bestseller status, season or price band, so campaigns can bid on business value.
The Google product data specification sets the hard limits: title up to 150 characters, description up to 5,000, up to 10 additional images, 2 to 100 product highlights of up to 150 characters each, up to 100 product_detail entries and up to 30 question and answer pairs. If your titles are AI-generated, Google asks for them in structured_title. To check a feed against these limits and the other requirements before you submit, use our Google Merchant Center requirements checklist.
A common apparel edge case: every size of a style carries the same GTIN, because the ERP stores the barcode at style level. Each size and color is a separate trade item with its own code. Fix it in the source system; a feed rule breaks at the next import.
Does Google Shopping show all products?
No. A product can sit in Merchant Center and never earn an impression, usually for one of four reasons.
- Disapproved. Google states that "disapproved products won't appear on Shopping ads or free listings" (Google Merchant Center Help). Invalid GTINs and price mismatches are typical causes.
- Limited performance. Warnings for missing
brand,mpn,color,size,genderorage_groupkeep the product live with fewer impressions. Unresolved warnings can escalate to account review. - Not relevant to the query. If the title and attributes don't describe what the shopper typed, the product isn't eligible for that search, whatever you bid.
- Starved by the campaign. Products outside a listing group, or behind a few budget-hungry bestsellers, get almost no traffic.
Merchant Center never flags that last one. Sort product-level reporting by impressions, lowest first, to find it.
How to rank in Google Shopping (free listings and ads)
Google says Shopping tab listings are ranked on "relevance to a user's current search terms", while Shopping ads mix bids with relevance. Both reward the same things: a title in the shopper's words, precise categorization, complete attributes, a correct GTIN and an accurate price. Our Google Merchant Center guide covers every attribute, and the product feed optimization guide shows how to run these fixes across channels from one source.
Performance Max feed strategy for Google Shopping ROAS: bestsellers and custom labels
Performance Max decides where budget goes, but your feed decides how it can be split. Custom labels let you pull bestsellers apart from the long tail, so you can protect ROAS on one group and give the other a real chance.
Why feed structure matters more in Performance Max
Performance Max serves across Search, Shopping, YouTube, Display, Discover, Gmail, and Maps from one campaign. With less targeting control, the feed carries more of the strategy. In Q3 2025 Performance Max took 68% of Shopping ad spend with 2% lower ROAS than standard Shopping, due to higher CPCs (Search Engine Land). By Q1 2026 its share was 67% and its ROAS was slightly better than standard Shopping for advertisers running both (Karooya). Either way, Performance Max can only split budget along the lines your feed gives it.
A popular setup is one Performance Max campaign holding the whole catalog. Past a few hundred products, we disagree. Left alone, PMax keeps spending on what already converts, and the rest never gets enough impressions to prove itself.
Custom labels that move ROAS
Google allows five custom labels, custom_label_0 to custom_label_4, with values of up to 100 characters and up to 1,000 unique values per label. Shoppers never see them.
| Label | Example values | How to use it |
|---|---|---|
custom_label_0 margin | high_margin, mid_margin, low_margin | Separate asset groups or campaigns with different target ROAS |
custom_label_1 performance | bestseller, steady, zombie | Isolate products that get no impressions and give them their own budget |
custom_label_2 season | ss26, aw26, evergreen | Push seasonal ranges in their window, pull them back after |
custom_label_3 price band | 0-50, 50-150, 150+ | Set realistic ROAS targets per order value |
custom_label_4 stock or launch | new_in, low_stock, clearance | Promote launches, stop spending on items about to sell out |
Push labels through a supplemental data source rather than the primary feed. It only overrides the attributes it contains, so the feed from Shopify or your PIM stays untouched.
A practical bestseller and long-tail structure
Bestsellers
Proven converters. Their own campaign or asset group, a ROAS target that protects margin, and titles and images kept in top shape.
Mid performers
Some sales, room to grow. Fix titles and attributes, then raise budget gradually. In our experience data work pays back fastest here.
Zombies
Few or no impressions. Label them, repair their data, then give them a separate budget so Performance Max can't ignore them.
The usual zombie advice is a low-ROAS campaign and patience. But budget on a product with a vague title and one image just buys impressions nobody clicks. Repair first, fund second, and recompute performance labels monthly.
How do I improve Google Shopping ROAS?
- Fix disapprovals and warnings so every profitable product is eligible.
- Rewrite titles on your top 20% of products by revenue first, then the mid performers.
- Add correct GTINs everywhere they exist. Google reports a 20% average click increase for retailers who did (Google Merchant Center Help).
- Split campaigns or asset groups by margin and performance labels, each with its own ROAS target.
- Keep feed price and availability in sync with the site, ideally with intraday updates.
- Land on the exact variant, and feed search terms insights back into titles monthly.
Meta Advantage+ catalog ads: how to set up and optimize your catalog
Advantage+ catalog ads (formerly dynamic ads) show each person the products from your catalog they're most likely to buy, on Facebook and Instagram. They work when the catalog is complete and the pixel's IDs match it. Product sets built around business goals do the rest.
How Meta catalog ads work
Meta describes Advantage+ catalog ads as a way to automatically promote relevant products from an entire catalog, using pixel and app events to build audiences. They either retarget past viewers or prospect broadly for new buyers. Advantage+ sales campaigns took 20% of retail Meta spend in Q1 2026, down from a 38% peak a year earlier, while overall Meta spend grew 13% (Karooya). eMarketer reported that Advantage+ shopping campaigns delivered almost 22% higher returns than the average Meta ad.
Setup in five steps
- Create a catalog in Commerce Manager and connect a scheduled feed, a platform integration such as Shopify, or the Catalog API.
- Install the Meta Pixel and Conversions API with
ViewContent,AddToCartandPurchaseevents. Meta requires thatcontent_ids"must match the IDs found in your product catalog". - Check the catalog match rate in Events Manager and fix mismatched IDs. A product the pixel can't connect to the catalog can't be retargeted.
- Build product sets with filters on
product_type,brand,price,custom_label_*orinternal_label, reusing the margin and bestseller labels from Google. Keep sets large, because products outside a set aren't considered. - Launch a sales campaign with catalog ads, then test price or discount overlays and video assets.
Step 3 is where we find the most broken setups: a catalog keyed on variant IDs while a third-party tag sends SKUs. Everything looks live, and retargeting misses most people.
Facebook product feed requirements
Meta's catalog field reference lists the required fields.
| Field | Requirement | Optimization tip |
|---|---|---|
id | Unique, up to 100 characters | Use the SKU and keep it identical to the pixel content_ids |
title | Up to 200 characters, 65 recommended | Lead with product type and key attribute; cut filler |
description | Up to 9,999 characters, plain text, different from the title | Benefits and use cases in the first lines |
availability | in stock or out of stock | Out-of-stock items stop serving, so sync stock often |
condition | new, refurbished or used | Required even if everything you sell is new |
price | Number plus ISO code, for example 59.00 EUR | Use sale_price with dates instead of editing price |
link | Valid URL on your domain | Land on the exact variant |
image_link | JPEG or PNG, at least 500 x 500 px, up to 8 MB | A new image needs a new URL or Meta keeps the old one |
brand | Up to 100 characters | Real brand name, never blank |
Meta accepts Google-format feeds, so one master catalog can serve both channels. Two hand-maintained feeds drift apart within weeks, so run both from one source, either your PIM or one of the product feed management tools for Google and Meta ads. Recommended fields that improve delivery include google_product_category or fb_product_category, color, gender, age_group, material, pattern, item_group_id, gtin, product_type, up to 20 additional_image_link images and custom_label_0 to custom_label_4. Meta also offers internal_label, which it recommends over custom labels for filtering product sets because it can be updated without triggering a policy review.
Instagram Shopping in 2026: catalog setup and product tagging
Instagram Shopping runs on the same Meta catalog. To tag products, the professional account needs an approved Instagram Shop linked to a catalog, and only products with an approved review status show up on posts (Meta for Developers). Feed posts take up to 20 product tags, carousels up to 20 (5 per slide) and Reels up to 30.
A product rejected in catalog review vanishes from tags and ads alike.
Titles and attributes that move CTR
The title is the strongest lever in any catalog ad. On Google it decides query matching, and in Meta placements it's the only copy most shoppers read. Build it from product type, brand, the defining attribute and the variant, in the words shoppers actually use.
Title formulas by category
| Category | Formula | Before | After |
|---|---|---|---|
| Apparel | Brand + gender + product type + material + fit + color + size | Linen Shirt Sand | Northvale Men's Linen Shirt, Relaxed Fit, Sand, Size M |
| Home | Brand + product type + material + dimension + color | Bedside Lamp Oslo | Fjordlight Ceramic Bedside Lamp, 35 cm, Matte White, Linen Shade |
| Beauty | Brand + product type + key ingredient + skin type + size | Hydra Serum | Lumea Hyaluronic Acid Face Serum for Dry Skin, 30 ml |
Product names are illustrative. The pattern follows Google's own guidance: put the most important details first, include specifics such as "waterproof", and add size, color or material when they define the variant (Google Merchant Center Help). Skip price, promotional text and all caps. Google rejects them in titles.
Most templates put the brand first every time. We only do that when people search for the brand; for a young label, lead with product type.

Measure and iterate: the catalog ads optimization loop
Treat catalog optimization as a cycle: audit, fix the products that matter most, segment for bidding, publish, then feed product-level results back into the data.
Audit
Which products are disapproved, limited or invisible?
Merchant Center diagnostics, Meta catalog issues, products with zero impressions
Fix
What data stops each product from matching and converting?
Titles, categories, GTINs, attributes, images, highlights
Segment
Where should budget go?
Custom labels for margin, performance, season and price band
Publish
Is the fixed data live everywhere?
Store, Merchant Center, Meta catalog, PIM, all in sync
Measure
What changed?
Product-level CTR, conversion rate, CPC and ROAS before and after
Run the loop monthly, and after every catalog or season change.
Measure by item ID. Campaign ROAS hides what happened, because budget shifts between products as their data improves. Compare four weeks before a change with four after, and log which fields changed when.
The link to AI shopping agents

Dynamic product ads are ads generated automatically from a product catalog. Google Shopping and Performance Max pull the title, image, price and attributes from your feed, and Meta Advantage+ catalog ads do the same. The platform picks which product each shopper sees, so catalog quality sets the ceiling.
Fix disapprovals first. Then front-load titles with product type and the key attribute, add correct GTINs and categorize precisely. Use custom labels to split campaigns by margin and performance, each with its own ROAS target.
Start with a complete catalog and pixel events whose content IDs match the catalog IDs. Keep titles near 65 characters with the product type first, fill attributes such as color or material, and build product sets from labels.
Quality Score is a keyword diagnostic for Search campaigns, built on expected CTR, ad relevance and landing page experience. Product data affects it through the landing page, since a better product page improves landing page experience. Shopping campaigns have no Quality Score, but their relevance is computed from the feed.
No. Disapproved products never appear, and products with warnings in Merchant Center get limited reach. Products whose title and attributes don't match a query aren't eligible for that search, whatever you bid. Products left outside a listing group, or crowded out by a few bestsellers in the same campaign, get few or no impressions.
Custom labels are five optional fields, custom_label_0 to custom_label_4, with up to 1,000 unique values each. Shoppers never see them. You use them to group products by margin, sales performance, season or price band for bidding and reporting in Performance Max, Shopping, and Demand Gen.
You need an Instagram professional account with an approved Instagram Shop linked to a Meta catalog. Only products that passed catalog review can be tagged. Feed posts and carousels take up to 20 product tags and Reels up to 30, and a product rejected in review disappears from tags and ads alike.
