GTINs Explained: When You Need Them and What to Do Without

The GTIN rules for Google Merchant Center, Amazon, AI shopping feeds and structured data, including what private-label and handmade brands should send instead.

The short answer

A GTIN (Global Trade Item Number) is the number under a product's barcode, such as a UPC or EAN, that identifies one product variant at every seller. Google Merchant Center expects it for every product that has one. Products without a GTIN, like private-label or handmade goods, send a brand plus an MPN instead.

01

GTIN: the short answer

Send a GTIN whenever the manufacturer assigned one, one per variant. No GTIN? Send brand plus MPN. Use identifier_exists = no only for products with no identifiers at all.

Most GTIN problems we find in catalog audits are wrong codes, rarely missing ones: a parent barcode copied to every size, a supplier EAN mangled by Excel, an internal SKU pasted into gtin to silence a warning. Google ties correct GTINs to 20% more clicks on average, and a product that has a GTIN but doesn't send it "could be disapproved".

Private-label brands get the most confusing advice. You don't need to buy barcodes to run Google Shopping. This article sits under our Google Merchant Center guide, which covers the rest of the feed.

02

What is a GTIN? Formats and check digits

A GTIN (Global Trade Item Number) is the number under a product's barcode. Brand owners assign it from a GS1 prefix, and the same product carries the same GTIN at every seller.

That last point is why Google and AI agents care. A GTIN tells them the blender on your site and the blender on a marketplace are one item, so they can group offers and compare prices. Google defines it as the same number for the same product from any seller.

FormatDigitsTypical use
UPC (GTIN-12)12North America. Convert 8-digit UPC-E to 12 digits
EAN (GTIN-13)13Europe and most markets outside North America
JAN8 or 13Japan
ISBN13Books. Convert ISBN-10 to ISBN-13
ITF-14 (GTIN-14)14Multipacks and cases

Those are the formats on Google's gtin attribute page. Spaces and dashes are ignored, and you can send up to 10 values when an item carries more than one code.

The last digit is a check digit calculated from the others, and Google requires a correct one (test it with the GS1 check digit calculator). We run that calculation over the whole feed before anything ships. A typo in a supplier file looks perfectly normal and fails without warning. Google also rejects codes starting with 2, 02 or 04, which are in-store and variable-weight codes, plus coupon prefixes 05, 98 and 99. If your ERP prints shelf labels starting with 2, keep them out of the feed.

Retailers take the manufacturer's code from the supplier sheet. Brand owners license numbers from their national GS1 office: GS1 US lists a single GTIN at $30 with no renewal, or 100 GTINs for $750 plus $150 a year (as of October 2026).

03

When you need a GTIN, and when you don't

You need a GTIN whenever the exact variant you sell already carries a barcode. If it doesn't, Google accepts brand and MPN instead, and you shouldn't buy codes just for Shopping.

Here is how common cases resolve under Google's rules for gtin and unique product identifiers.

Every variant needs its own code. GS1 puts it plainly: "Each product variation needs its own GS1 GTIN". A tee in three colors and five sizes needs 15 GTINs.

Do private-label brands need to buy GTINs?

For Google, no. Google says store-brand products often have no GTIN and tells you to send your store brand plus a code of your choice, like your SKU, as the MPN. Plenty of guides tell private-label sellers to buy barcodes "for Google". We think that's the wrong reason to spend the money. Buy GS1 codes when a channel demands them, such as Amazon, big-box retailers or wholesale partners scanning cartons. And buy them from GS1. Resold codes from old prefixes are registered to someone else.

04

Without a GTIN: brand, MPN or identifier_exists

Without a GTIN, brand and MPN become your identifiers. identifier_exists = no is a narrow exception for products that have no GTIN, MPN or brand.

`brand` is required for any product with a clear brand, including products you make yourself. One value, one language, up to 70 characters. `mpn` is required when there's no manufacturer GTIN. Only invent an MPN if you are the manufacturer. Each color needs its own MPN, while apparel sizes often share one.

`identifier_exists` set to no is meant for custom goods, antiques, vintage items or books published before 1970. Google warns you if it finds evidence an identifier exists.

Here we disagree with a lot of agency playbooks. Setting identifier_exists = no across a catalog makes the "missing identifiers" warnings vanish, so teams love it. It's wrong for any product with a brand. Google's brand page says that if you make and sell an unbranded product, you should use your store name as the brand and send an MPN instead. A clean warning list with wrong data underneath helps nobody.

GTINs beyond Merchant Center: Amazon, AI feeds, structured data

The identifiers in your feed should match your Product structured data, your marketplace listings and your AI platform feeds. Mismatches between them stop products from being matched.

Structured data. Google's merchant listing documentation recommends gtin and its sub-properties, using the most specific one that applies. Schema.org accepts 8, 12, 13 or 14 digits with a valid check digit. The failure we see is drift: the feed gets fixed in a supplemental sheet while the product detail page (PDP) template still prints the old code. See structured data for ecommerce.

Amazon. Stricter than Google. Amazon's help pages, quoted by Jungle Scout, say it verifies UPCs against the GS1 database. Sellers without barcodes apply for a GTIN exemption per category and brand. More in Amazon Rufus.

AI shopping feeds. OpenAI's product feed spec makes brand required and gtin optional: omit it if unassigned, don't invent one, preserve leading zeros.

For an assistant, a GTIN is how it knows three stores sell the same thing:

A store that sent the grinder with the white variant's code would sit outside that group. Identifiers are the dullest part of Agentic Commerce Optimization, and they decide if you make the comparison at all. Getting recommended by ChatGPT covers the rest.

Common GTIN errors and how to fix them

Most GTIN errors start in spreadsheets and supplier files. Fix them at the source, in your PIM or ERP, or they return with the next import.

Start in Merchant Center under Products, Needs attention, filter by identifier issues, then trace each one back to its source data.

  • One GTIN on every variant

A parent barcode carried down to all sizes. Pull variant-level codes from the supplier

  • Scientific notation

Excel turns a 13-digit EAN into 8.71235E+12. Format the column as text first

  • Lost leading zero

A UPC starting with 0 shrinks to 11 digits. Store GTINs as text

  • Internal SKU in gtin

Your own codes belong in mpn

  • In-store prefixes

Codes starting with 2, 02 or 04 are internal. Remove them

  • Feed and page mismatch

Generate the feed and the PDP markup from the same field

On Shopify, most Google channel setups send the variant's Barcode field as gtin, so fix it there. Some teams keep a supplemental sheet just for identifiers. It works until someone edits the store and forgets the sheet. We prefer one source of truth upstream, as the product feed optimization guide explains. With identifiers clean, the next job is mapping your catalog to Google's product taxonomy, and the Google Merchant Center requirements checklist covers the remaining account and feed basics.

How AndromedAI helps

AndromedAI doesn't create GTINs, and no tool should. It makes sure the identifiers you already have travel with every product, next to the complete attributes and copy that Google and AI agents read.

We import from where your codes live (CSV, Excel, Google Sheets, Shopify, Akeneo, SAP and other ERPs, PDF spec sheets, XML or JSON feeds) and publish optimized pages to Shopify, Google Merchant Center, Salesforce Commerce Cloud, Adobe Commerce, Shopware, Akeneo, Plytix and WooCommerce. See integrations. The Optimizer rewrites titles and descriptions and extracts attributes, and the free AI Readiness Audit scores pages on dimensions including Product Data Completeness and Shopping Metadata. FAQ

A GTIN, or Global Trade Item Number, is the number printed under a product's barcode. It identifies one specific product variant and stays the same at every seller, which lets Google and other platforms group offers for the same item. UPC, EAN, JAN, ISBN and ITF-14 are all GTIN formats.

UPC and EAN are both types of GTIN, so every UPC or EAN is a GTIN but not the other way around. A UPC has 12 digits and is used mainly in North America. An EAN has 13 digits and is used in Europe and most other markets.

Google expects a GTIN for every product that has a manufacturer-assigned one. Leaving out an existing GTIN can lead to disapproval or limited visibility in Shopping results. Products that never had one, like private-label or handmade items, don't need a GTIN and can send brand and MPN instead.

Send brand and mpn. Private-label products use the store brand as brand and your own unique code, such as the SKU, as the MPN. Set identifier_exists to no only for products with no GTIN, no MPN and no brand, such as custom one-off pieces.

Yes. GS1 requires a separate GTIN for every product variation, so a shirt sold in three colors and five sizes needs 15 codes. Google also rejects the same GTIN on variants that differ in color or size, which is why parent barcodes copied to every variant cause errors.

Yes. OpenAI's product feed specification includes a gtin field and asks merchants to omit it when no code is assigned rather than invent one. GTINs let assistants recognize that offers from different stores are the same product, so they can compare price and availability across sellers.
