Best Shopify PIM in 2026: 7 Options Compared for Shopify Catalogs

How Shopify's native data model, Plytix, Akeneo, Salsify, Pimberly, Sales Layer and Pimcore compare on connectors, metafields and pricing, and when you don't need a PIM for Shopify at all.

The short answer

The best Shopify PIM depends on catalog size and channels. One store with a few thousand SKUs can run on Shopify's taxonomy and metafields. Plytix fits brands with several Shopify stores and lean teams. Akeneo, Salsify, Pimberly, Sales Layer and Pimcore fit complex catalogs with ERP inputs or retail channels.

01

Shopify PIM: the short answer

Most Shopify stores under a few thousand SKUs, selling in one or two languages, can run on Shopify's own product data model. A Shopify PIM earns its cost once you add stores, markets, retailers or an ERP feeding product data.

  1. 01

Shopify already gives you a product taxonomy plus category metafields, custom metafields and metaobjects. For a single store that's a workable attribute model, if someone owns it.

  2. 02

Plytix is the usual first PIM for Shopify merchants. It installs from the App Store and runs several stores from one workspace.

  3. 03

The bigger PIMs (Akeneo, Salsify, Pimberly, Sales Layer, Pimcore) suit catalogs with ERP inputs and syndication well beyond Shopify. Expect an implementation project.

  4. 04

A PIM decides where product data lives and who approves it. It won't write the copy or make products readable for AI shopping agents. Plan for that layer separately.

02

How to choose a PIM for Shopify

Start from your catalog and channels, then judge each tool on how it writes into Shopify: variants, metafields, handles, translations. Feature lists look alike; connectors decide whether the project works.

We see two common mistakes. Teams buy an enterprise PIM for a 600-SKU single-language store and end up maintaining two admins. Or they stretch spreadsheets across four regional stores until nobody trusts the data. Write down your SKU count, stores, languages and channels before you book a single demo.

The criteria that matter for Shopify specifically

  • Connector ownership

Built by the PIM vendor or by a partner agency? Ask who fixes it when Shopify changes its API.

  • Metafields and metaobjects

Can it write product and variant metafields of every type you use? Many connectors handle metafields but not metaobjects.

  • Category metafields

Does it map to the Shopify Standard Product Taxonomy and its category attributes, which drive storefront filters and swatches?

  • Variant model

Shopify caps a product at three options. If your PIM models four (color, size, width, length), decide where the fourth goes before you sync.

  • Handles and redirects

A sync that rewrites a product handle changes the URL. Check that the connector asks Shopify to create the redirect, or you lose rankings overnight.

  • Multiple stores and markets

One master catalog, with content per store or language pushed only where it's needed.

  • Who wins on conflicts

If merchandisers edit in Shopify admin, the next PIM sync may overwrite them. You need a clear rule on which system owns which field.

  • Published pricing and SKU tiers

Costs usually scale with SKU count or users. Model what your catalog will look like in three years.

Lighter options: Shopify's own data model and Plytix

If you run one or two Shopify stores, start here. Shopify's native model is better than its reputation, and Plytix adds the PIM layer without an implementation project.

Shopify native: metafields, metaobjects and category attributes

Best for: a single store with a clear owner for product data.

Shopify's category metafields attach standard attributes to each taxonomy category. Pick "Shirts" and you get clothing size, neckline and sleeve length type, with default values you can rename. Rename "black" to "graphite" once and it updates everywhere the value is used. Those attributes drive storefront filters and color swatches. Custom metafields cover the rest, and metaobjects hold structured, reusable entries like size charts or ingredient profiles.

Native has one real advantage in 2026. Shopify's Agentic Storefronts put products in ChatGPT, Microsoft Copilot, AI Mode and the Gemini app straight from Shopify Admin, and Shopify says AI surfaces favor structured data. What sits cleanly in your product record is what those channels use.

Limits: no approval workflow and no per-channel completeness score. Translations live in Translate & Adapt, fine for two languages and tedious for six. In practice, one person's Excel file becomes the real master catalog. If that file has a column called "material_FINAL_v3", you have a PIM. Just a fragile one.

One practitioner tip: check which metafields your Google & YouTube channel actually reads before you restructure anything. Older stores often still hold Google values in the mm-google-shopping namespace, and moving them breaks the feed quietly. Our Google Merchant Center guide covers the feed side.

Plytix

Best for: brands with 1,000 to 50,000 SKUs, two or more Shopify stores, a small team and no appetite for a six-month rollout.

The Plytix PIM Connector imports your Shopify catalog in one click into a spreadsheet-style workspace, then syncs variants and metafields back to one or several stores, with translations per market. According to Plytix, metafields behave like any other attribute at product and variant level, and an update goes only to the stores that need it.

Strengths: published pricing with a free entry plan, plus built-in AI for autofill and translation. AndromedAI also publishes optimized content back into Plytix; we explain the setup in how AndromedAI works with Plytix, Akeneo and Salsify.

Limits: Plytix states metaobjects are not synced directly. If your theme relies on metaobjects for size guides or ingredient lists, plan a workaround. Heavy ERP integration and complex approval chains are the territory of the larger PIMs below.

Pricing: the Shopify App Store listing shows a free plan (500 SKUs), a Shopify Special plan at $149/month (10,000 SKUs, 30-day trial) and Pro at $499/month (50,000 SKUs). On Plytix's own pricing page the Shopify connector is listed as an add-on to its main plans, so check which route fits you.

05

Mid-market and enterprise PIMs for Shopify

Akeneo, Salsify, Pimberly, Sales Layer and Pimcore are systems of record for catalogs that live far beyond Shopify. They're stronger than lighter tools on governance, workflow and syndication, and they cost more to run.

We'd push back on a common assumption here. Moving to Shopify Plus is no reason on its own to buy an enterprise PIM. Plus merchants with one brand and a tidy catalog often do fine with Plytix or native. The trigger is complexity in the data, such as ERP inputs, many suppliers or retail partners.

Akeneo

Best for: mid-market and enterprise brands with ERP or PLM inputs and many locales.

Akeneo publishes its own Akeneo App for Shopify. It maps Shopify fields to PIM attributes for products and product models, syncs variants and metafields with images, and runs scheduled syncs with readable error logs. It works with Akeneo's Growth, Advanced and Premium packages; partner connectors cover other setups.

Strengths: a mature data model with completeness by channel and locale, and a large partner network. Limits: you'll need an implementation partner for anything beyond simple setups. Pricing: the Community Edition is free and open source but self-hosted; SaaS packages are priced on request. AndromedAI writes optimized content back to Akeneo the same way it does for Plytix.

Salsify

Best for: consumer brands that sell through big retailers and marketplaces and also run a Shopify store.

Salsify lists Shopify among its pre-built integrations. As Shopify describes it, the integration is built on GraphQL and maps Salsify's hierarchies to Shopify's parent and variant structure. Readiness Reports transform master data per store, so you don't keep separate Shopify copies.

Strengths: retailer syndication and governance at scale. Limits: if Shopify is your only real channel, you're paying for retail reach you won't use. Pricing: on request.

Pimberly

Best for: retailers with large catalogs and several Shopify storefronts that need PIM and DAM together.

Pimberly's Shopify connector is built in house. It pushes changes in near real time, maps metafields at parent and variant level, syncs media to Shopify and supports multiple storefronts. Pimberly is a Shopify Certified Technology Partner. Pricing, published on its pricing page: Regular $36,000/year (50,000 SKUs, 20 users), Pro $60,000/year, Corporate $90,000/year, Enterprise on quote; Pimberly AI is an add-on from $7,500/year. That transparency is rare at this tier.

Sales Layer

Best for: manufacturers and distributors feeding Shopify alongside B2B portals and distributor catalogs.

The Sales Layer PIM Connector syncs collections, variants and media along with metafields and multi-language fields, and has a multi-store mode. The Shopify listing says plans start from $1,000/month. Sales Layer's pricing page shows quote-only plans, and the entry Scale plan covers up to 5 users and 10,000 SKUs in one language.

Pimcore

Best for: companies with in-house developers that want an open source platform for PIM and DAM.

Pimcore publishes its pricing: Community Edition free, Professional $9,900/year, Enterprise $29,900/year, PaaS on quote. Shopify sync comes from third-party connectors such as Hamari's Pimcore PIM Connector, from $149/month for up to 1,000 SKUs. Budget for engineering time.

Where AndromedAI fits next to a Shopify PIM

AndromedAI isn't a PIM and doesn't replace one. It sits on top of Shopify or your PIM and optimizes the product content itself: attributes, titles, descriptions, FAQ, intents.

A PIM can tell you a product is 100% complete while the description still says "Our favorite shirt for summer". Completeness counts filled fields. It doesn't judge whether those fields answer how shoppers search or what an AI assistant needs to recommend the product. That gap is what Agentic Commerce Optimization works on.

Here's the kind of question that exposes it. The assistant can only pick a product whose fabric and occasion are stated in the data.

How it connects

AndromedAI imports from Shopify, Akeneo, spreadsheets, ERPs such as SAP, and XML or JSON feeds. It publishes to Shopify through a native app and to Akeneo, Plytix, Google Merchant Center and other platforms. With a PIM, the optimized values go back into the PIM, so it stays the system of record. Changes pass AI checks and approval workflows, with auto-approval above an AI Checker score of 4.0. Which Shopify PIM should you pick

Match the tool to your situation, then test it with two of your messiest product families before you sign.

One store, under 2,000 SKUs, one or two languages

Stay on Shopify's native model. Define category metafields and a short list of custom metafields, name an owner, and spend the money on content quality.

Two to five Shopify stores or markets, lean team

Plytix. Published pricing, multistore sync from one workspace, fast to start. Check how you'll handle metaobjects.

ERP or PLM is the source, with many locales

Akeneo, with an implementation partner, or Pimcore if you have developers and want open source.

Retailers and marketplaces matter as much as Shopify

Salsify. Its strength is syndication and governance across retail endpoints.

Large retail catalog, several storefronts, PIM plus DAM

Pimberly, with published annual pricing by SKU tier.

Manufacturer or distributor with B2B channels

Sales Layer, which covers B2B catalogs and Shopify from one hub.

Whichever you choose, the PIM only stores and moves the data. Adapt content per market (our localization guide covers units and size systems) and check the output in product feed optimization. Still unsure whether you need a PIM at all? The decision checklist in our PIM guide helps.

FAQ

A Shopify PIM is product information management software connected to a Shopify store. It holds the master product data (attributes, descriptions, media, translations), lets teams enrich and approve it, and syncs it to one or more Shopify stores and other channels through a connector.

Not always. A single store with a few thousand SKUs or fewer and one or two languages can usually run on Shopify's taxonomy and metafields. A PIM pays off with several stores or markets, retail channels, ERP inputs or approval workflows.

It depends on catalog size and channels. Plytix suits smaller brands with several Shopify stores. Akeneo and Pimcore suit complex catalogs with ERP inputs, Salsify suits retail syndication, and Pimberly suits large multi-storefront retailers. A single store with a few thousand SKUs may need no PIM at all, since Shopify's own metafields can cover it.

Plytix lists a free plan on the Shopify App Store for up to 500 SKUs. Akeneo Community Edition and Pimcore Community Edition are free and open source but self-hosted, and connecting them to Shopify needs a connector and technical work.

Most Shopify PIM connectors sync product and variant metafields. Metaobject support varies by vendor. Plytix, for example, states that metaobjects are not synced directly. Ask each vendor to demo your actual metafield and metaobject definitions, including variant-level fields, before you sign a contract.

A PIM keeps product data consistent, which helps. Being recommended also depends on content quality, from complete attributes to use cases. AI assistants can only match what the product data states, so an optimization layer such as AndromedAI is usually added on top.
